    What HEIC is and why people convert it

    HEIC is the format iPhones and iPads have used for photos since iOS 11. It takes about half the space of a JPG of similar quality. The catch is compatibility: Windows without an extra codec, many web forms and some apps do not accept HEIC.

    How to stop your iPhone from saving HEIC

    1. Open Settings → Camera → Formats.
    2. Choose "Most Compatible": new photos will be saved as JPG.
    3. To convert automatically when transferring to a computer: Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic.

    What happens to quality

    At 90% quality the difference is usually invisible, though the file is larger than the HEIC. Use 90–95% for documents and printing, 75–80% for messaging apps.

    Large 48 MP HEIC files take longer to decode, especially on phones.

    File privacy

    Conversion runs in your browser. Images are never sent to a server, so the tool is safe for passports, contracts and personal photos. Everything disappears when you close the tab.
